A cold front is moving through São Paulo this weekend and is expected to increase cloud cover, bring showers, and lower temperatures across much of the state. According to data released by Meteored, the system arrives accompanied by a mass of cold air, which should leave mornings chilly and afternoons mild or with a chilly feel in some areas.
Before the change, São Paulo will have a brief respite from the weather. The approach of the cold front, however, should already cause isolated rain showers in the south of the state, mainly in the regions of Itapeva and Registro, including the south coast, between the end of the afternoon and the evening of Friday (4).
On Saturday (5), instability increases. During the morning, moderate to locally intense rain is expected and there is a possibility of storms in the south and east of São Paulo.
Between the afternoon and evening, storms may intensify, with numerous lightning strikes, especially in central and western areas of the state. Rain is expected to affect the entire state of São Paulo, with moderate to locally heavy intensity.
According to data released by Meteored, wind gusts between 50 and 60 km/h are also not ruled out. On Saturday (5), the risk is concentrated in the interior and north of the state from the afternoon onwards. On Sunday (6), gusts may occur in the interior and east, in addition to possible hail.
In the city of São Paulo, the forecast indicates light to moderate rain at any time on Saturday, with the possibility of thunderstorms. Sunday (6) will continue to be unstable throughout the state. Between dawn and morning, moderate to heavy rain is expected, with a risk of storms.
From the afternoon onwards, instability should become more concentrated in the north and east of São Paulo state, with isolated thunderstorms. At the same time, the weather will begin to improve in the south-central region. In the capital, Sunday will be cloudy with light rain throughout the day, with the possibility of thunderstorms in the morning.
The most significant change will occur in temperatures. With the passage of the cold front, a strong mass of cold air will enter the state and cause a sharp drop in temperatures.
Over the weekend, minimum temperatures are not expected to drop below 16°C in most of São Paulo, especially in the central-eastern region. In the south, in the Sorocaba region, temperatures may reach 10°C. Maximum temperatures will also be lower in eastern São Paulo, ranging between 12°C and 18°C.
The cold will intensify even further on Monday (7), Brazil's Independence Day holiday. According to data released by Meteored, the entire state will have minimum temperatures below 15°C.
In the south, east, and Paraíba Valley, some locations may register temperatures between 5°C and 7°C. The forecast indicates 6°C in Ribeirão Branco and Campos do Jordão and 7°C in Ribeirão Grande.
During the afternoon, the cold will also be felt in the central-eastern part of São Paulo state. Highs shouldn't exceed 17°C in that region and could reach only 8°C in the south, in the Sorocaba region. In the city of São Paulo, the holiday will be quite cold with a low temperature range. The forecast indicates a low of 10°C and a high of 13°C.
On Monday (7), the cold front will have moved away and the weather should become stable again in practically the entire state. In coastal areas, however, there may still be drizzle due to moisture circulation and the presence of many clouds. The trend is for the cold to continue until the middle of next week, keeping temperatures below the standard recorded before the passage of the system.
