Rain delays wheat management and increases the risk of disease in Rio Grande do Sul.

The culture of wheat In Rio Grande do Sul, development is within normal limits, but low light and frequent rains have limited growth and delayed management operations. According to data released by Emater/RS-Ascar in the Conjunctural Report on Thursday (27), high humidity also increases the risk of diseases, especially gibberella, in flowering areas.

The predominant phenological stage in the State is vegetative development, which accounts for 61% of the crops. The most advanced areas are in flowering (28%), grain filling (10%) and maturation (1%).

According to data released by Emater/RS-Ascar, in flowering areas, the combination of high relative humidity, cloud cover, and rainfall has increased the risk of ear diseases, mainly Fusarium head blight. This scenario requires monitoring to identify possible floral infections. Symptoms of foliar diseases and powdery mildew have also been observed, especially in crops with greater nitrogen availability. Excess soil moisture has restricted access for machinery, delaying applications of nitrogen and pesticides.

The frosts of varying intensity recorded during the period do not yet allow for a consolidated assessment of any potential damage, since most areas remain in vegetative stages. Despite the environmental restrictions, crop conditions are generally satisfactory, with productive potential still preserved. The area projected by Emater/RS-Ascar for the 2026 harvest is 814,220 hectares, with an estimated average productivity of 2,701 kg/ha.

In the Emater/RS-Ascar administrative region of Bagé, humidity conditions vary between locations. In São Borja, on the Western Border, crop development and health are considered good. According to data released by Emater/RS-Ascar, the crops in São Borja are distributed among heading (30%), booting (50%), and stem elongation (20%). In the Campanha region, excess humidity hinders nitrogen fertilization and herbicide applications in later-planted areas.

In Caçapava do Sul, the first planted crops have reached the flowering stage and show a slight reduction in productive potential due to weather conditions. So far, no significant damage caused by frost has been recorded. In Caxias do Sul, reduced rainfall and increased sunlight have favored crop development.

In the Campos de Cima da Serra region, sub-zero temperatures and significant frosts coincided with tillering, a phase in which low temperatures can favor the emission of tillers. According to data released by Emater/RS-Ascar, nitrogen fertilization operations continue, along with weed control and phytosanitary monitoring.

In the Frederico Westphalen administrative region, 321% of the crops are in vegetative development, 541% in flowering, and 141% in grain filling. Producers are focusing their efforts on phytosanitary management, mainly with fungicides, while high soil moisture continues to restrict some mechanized operations.

In Ijuí, low sunlight negatively impacted plant development. According to data released by Emater/RS-Ascar, pale coloration, yellowing in the lower third of the plant, increased height, thin stems, and narrow leaves were observed. Powdery mildew was also present in crops with higher nitrogen availability. The delay in phytosanitary operations meant that treatments were carried out during periods of higher sunlight.

Medium-intensity frosts were recorded at the end of the period in Ijuí, but the damage has not yet been measured. In Passo Fundo, the crops are distributed between tillering (20%), booting (65%) and heading (15%). Producers have scheduled phytosanitary control according to environmental conditions.

In the Pelotas administrative region, 88% of the areas are in vegetative development and 12% are in the early flowering stage. According to data released by Emater/RS-Ascar, more than 200 millimeters of rain fell in part of the region in the last three weeks of August. Combined with predominantly cloudy days and low direct solar radiation, the excess rain has delayed plant development.

In Santa Maria, approximately 50% of the crops are in vegetative development, 43% in flowering, and 5% in grain filling. In Santa Rosa, 52% of the crops are in vegetative development, 36% in flowering, 11% in grain filling, and 1% in maturation.

In Santa Rosa, adequate humidity and mild temperatures favored the vegetative growth of crops. On the other hand, the high proportion of areas in anthesis increases the risk of Fusarium head blight.

According to data released by Emater/RS-Ascar, areas in the grain-filling and maturation stages show a satisfactory production outlook. In Soledade, excess moisture continues to restrict access for machinery and the performance of crop management practices.

Environmental conditions also favor the incidence of fungal diseases, with reports of symptoms such as leaf spots and rust. Producers focus their management efforts mainly on preventing Fusarium head blight, considering the need for protection against floral infections.

According to data released by Emater/RS-Ascar, 10% of the crops are in the tillering stage, 60% in stem elongation, and 30% in the heading or flowering stage. Despite the excess water, the overall condition of the crop remains within normal parameters.
