Soybean production costs for 2026/27 rise in Mato Grosso, while corn and cotton see a slight decrease.

The Imea (Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics) released a report highlighting updates on the production costs of the state's main crops, such as soybeans, cotton, and corn. In the case of soybeans, there was an increase in costs, while the other two crops registered a slight decrease.

In the case of soybeans, the Agricultural Production Cost in Mato Grosso project (Senar-MT and Imea) in July 2026 estimated the cost of the 2026/27 soybean crop at R$ 4,321.32/ha, 3.35% higher than that of the 2025/26 crop.

"The increase was mainly influenced by fertilizers and soil amendments, and mechanized operations, which increased by 5.74% and 22.74%, respectively, compared to the last harvest. The rise in these components was directly influenced by the conflict in the Middle East, which has put pressure on logistics and the price of these inputs (diesel oil, in the case of mechanized operations)," explain the Imea technicians.

“Given this scenario of high input costs, producers may review the fertilizer package used in the next harvest, since the reduction in diesel consumption is more limited. However, it is worth noting that the 26/27 harvest still presents a climatic risk, given the El Niño phenomenon for this year, another factor of uncertainty for crop productivity, raising concerns about the producer's margin,” adds the Institute.

In the case of the annual comparison for cotton, the cost showed a decrease of 1.44%, being estimated at R$ 10,619.86/ha. As a result, the COE decreased by 0.68% compared to the previous crop, totaling R$ 15,218.19/ha. In contrast, the CT registered an increase of 1.04%, reaching R$ 18,658.81/ha. Using the estimated productivity for the 25/26 crop of 127.52 @/ha of lint as a reference, the PE to cover the COE was estimated at R$ 119.34/@.

The weighted average price of cotton for the 2026/27 crop year was R$ 127.31/@, indicating that current prices remain above the break-even point.

“However, the difference between the marketed price and the breakeven point was R$ 7.97/@, lower than that observed in recent harvests, indicating a reduction in the safety margin over operating costs and reinforcing the need for efficient management of production costs to preserve the profitability of the activity,” the publication states.

In the case of corn, the normalization of logistics in the Middle East in June 2026 allowed for the resumption of exports and improved negotiating conditions for buyers, thus putting pressure on fertilizer prices. However, delays in input purchases could concentrate demand in the coming months and raise prices.

In June 2026, pesticide expenses fell by 0.32%, to R$ 913.04/ha, while seed expenses increased by 0.95%, to R$ 848.78/ha, limiting a larger drop in costs, estimated at R$ 3,767.37/ha. Therefore, the COE and COT were projected at R$ 5,493.40/ha and R$ 6,057.70/ha, a monthly decrease of 0.63% and 0.60%, respectively.

Considering the estimated productivity of 128.64 sc/ha for the 25/26 crop, it is necessary to market the corn for at least R$ 42.70/sc and R$ 47.09/sc to cover the COE and COT. Thus, with the average monthly price for the 26/27 crop of R$ 44.76/sc, this value remains above the COE breakeven point, but below to cover the COT.
