Experts share insights on soybean seed quality.

A virtual meeting connected laboratory professionals from different producing regions of the country to share relevant information about cultivars, occurrences, and points of attention observed during the harvest.

Seed quality is one of the determining factors for establishing a productive and safe soybean crop. To expand knowledge about the 2025/26 crop scenario, the AMSSOJA BRASIL Academy held a virtual meeting on September 17th entitled "Overview of Soybean Seed Quality – What are laboratories seeing in this 2025/26 crop?".

The initiative of the Brazilian Association of Soybean Seed Multipliers (AMSSOJA BRASIL) brought together professionals and leaders from seed laboratories operating in the main producing regions of the Cerrado and Southern Brazil. The aim was to promote a technical exchange between different experiences and regional realities, contributing to a broader view of soybean seed quality this season.

Moderated by Pedro Tomazelli, the project coordinator, the meeting included the participation of the following guests: Dr. Suemar Avelar, Nadia Cristina Staffteef, Dr. Norma D'Ávila Denardin, Elza Aparecida Toffoli, and Bárbara Naves.

Different regions, one shared panorama.

Throughout the program, the invited experts shared insights gained from analyses conducted by the laboratories, addressing aspects related to the main cultivars evaluated, damage and occurrences identified, particularities among genetic materials, and points that deserve attention throughout the growing season, such as fungi and damage due to humidity and type of storage.

With particular emphasis on the chain of fungi observed in seeds due to rainfall patterns at harvest time, indicating that proper seed treatment is essential. After all, the great strength of the chain lies in the certification environment, both in seed production and in laboratories.

Despite the different scenarios in the regions, the quality of the seeds evaluated was positive, with excellent results using the tetrazolium test and the germination and vigor indices.  

The meeting also sought to identify aspects that bring greater security to producers and professionals in the sector, as well as to gather information that can contribute to decision-making and to monitoring the quality of soybean seeds.

“In an opportunity like this, we are paving the way to strengthen laboratory networks and methodologies that contribute to improved results and standardization. It is a chance for laboratories to show the concern we have for the productive sector. What pleases me greatly is to have seen a positive scenario in all regions regarding the quality of soybean seeds that we will have this harvest,” pointed out Dr. Suemar Avelar, laboratory and analysis coordinator for Mato Grosso.

By bringing together experts who monitor seed quality directly in laboratories, the AMSSOJA BRASIL Academy has strengthened an important space for technical dialogue. The diversity of regions and experiences has allowed for a perspective on different behaviors observed in the analyses and a broader understanding of the challenges and opportunities of the 2025/26 crop season.

Rather than presenting isolated data, the aim was to connect perceptions and experiences to collectively construct a picture of the quality of soybean seeds produced this season.

“The networks of laboratories being created in different regions have contributed to reducing discrepancies between analyses. This integration is strengthened by multipliers, as laboratories provide support at all stages of production, from the field to seed shipment, in addition to monitoring in the crop. Therefore, integrated action between laboratories, the sector, and networks, focusing on the standardization of tests and the training of teams, is essential to identify differences and ensure reliable information,” highlighted specialist Nadia Cristina Staffteef, owner of a laboratory in Bahia.

This action further reinforces the role of the AMSSOJA BRASIL Academy as a space for disseminating knowledge, training, and bringing together professionals, companies, and specialists linked to the seed production chain.

“We want to provide even more opportunities for these meetings; the association is open to the main discussions in the sector. Our intention is always to improve this project, which has become a high-level and integrative environment,” concluded consultant Pedro Tomazelli.
