Early soybean planting favors the corn planting window in Mato Grosso, but rainfall distribution remains a concern.

The progress of soybean planting in Mato Grosso has improved the prospects for planting the 2026/27 second corn crop within the ideal window, but rainfall distribution still appears as one of the main risk factors for the cycle, according to the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea).

According to the institute, soybean planting is progressing at a rate higher than the highest rates observed in the last five years for this period. This progress could bring forward the soybean harvest and, consequently, free up areas earlier for corn, favoring the planting schedule for the 7.48 million hectares projected for the crop in the state.

However, climate prospects show important differences within Mato Grosso. According to data from CPTEC/INPE reproduced by Imea, between November 2026 and January 2027, rainfall is expected to be near average in parts of the state, with negative deviations in the north and above-average volumes mainly in the central-south and east.

For the period between December 2026 and February 2027, the forecast indicates an expansion of areas with above-average rainfall in south-central and eastern Mato Grosso. This scenario may favor the maintenance of soil moisture and conditions for corn planting, but it also brings operational risks if rainfall is excessive.

Imea highlights that above-average rainfall can interrupt or delay both the soybean harvest and the planting of the cereal. Conversely, any water restrictions during critical periods, especially during flowering and grain filling, can also compromise crop yields.

Given these uncertainties, the institute maintained its projected corn productivity for 2026/27 at 119.64 sacks per hectare and production at 53.68 million tons. However, confirmation of this potential will depend not only on the total rainfall, but mainly on how the precipitation is distributed over the coming months.
