Beans: how to choose the best planting window

Getting the planting window right for beans is one of the key decisions for reducing climate risks and preserving the crop's productive potential. In Brazil, the dates vary according to region, climate, altitude, and cultivation system, requiring the producer to combine historical rainfall and temperature data, cultivar cycle, and agricultural zoning to determine the best time for sowing.

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is sensitive to extremes of heat, cold, and excess soil moisture. Therefore, the ideal planting window combines adequate water availability during emergence and flowering, mild temperatures during the reproductive phase, and a lower risk of severe events during harvest.

These conditions vary significantly across Brazilian regions. While hot and humid areas need to avoid periods of heavy rain, subtropical regions require special attention to frost and low temperatures.

The calendar is also related to the three main bean harvests. The first harvest, known as the rainy season harvest, is usually sown at the beginning of the rainy season. The second, or dry season harvest, occurs after summer crops and takes advantage of residual soil moisture. In some regions, there is also a third harvest, often conducted with irrigation during the driest months. In this system, the artificial supply of water increases planting flexibility, but does not eliminate the risks associated with extreme temperatures and excess moisture.

In states with warmer climates, such as Acre, Amazonas, Amapá, Pará, Rondônia, and Roraima, planning should focus on periods with lower rainfall. Excessive precipitation can promote foliar diseases and hinder harvesting.

In Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and Santa Catarina, the challenge is different. Producers need to avoid the most sensitive phases of the crop coinciding with periods of frost or very low temperatures, especially during flowering.

In Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Tocantins, and parts of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, the alternation between rainy and dry seasons allows for different cultivation strategies. In these areas, however, it is necessary to monitor the depletion of available water in the soil and the risk of thermal stress throughout the cycle.

When beans are planted in succession to soybeans or corn, the planting window is directly conditioned by the harvest date of the previous crop. The soil moisture available immediately after harvesting also needs to be considered. A late harvest can reduce the available area for bean planting and increase the risk of water stress. In irrigated systems, the controlled availability of water expands sowing possibilities. Even so, very high or low temperatures during the reproductive phase and excess surface moisture can favor phytosanitary problems.

From January to December, conditions for bean cultivation change in all regions. At the beginning of the year, much of the country is still under the influence of the rainy season, guaranteeing water but also increasing the risk of disease. With the arrival of autumn, the reduction in rainfall in areas of the Central-West, Southeast, and part of the Northeast may create space for a second crop. During this period, however, the risk of water shortage increases.

During winter and early spring, cold weather and frost become limiting factors in subtropical areas. In drier environments, irrigated farming can gain ground, provided the producer can adequately control the water.

Decision-making should consider rainfall history, the start and end of the rainy season, the occurrence of frosts and droughts, as well as average and extreme temperatures. This information should be analyzed in conjunction with the official agricultural zoning for bean cultivation in the municipality. Based on this, the producer can identify the range of dates in which the climatic risk is considered acceptable.

The type of bean also influences planning. Carioca, black, colored, and specialty bean cultivars may have different fits within the commercial harvest windows. Furthermore, differences in altitude and rainfall patterns mean that the same state may have different planting windows.

Higher, cooler areas may allow for slightly later planting in the first crop. In lower, warmer areas, planting tends to need to be closer to the start of the rainy season. In areas prone to frost, the producer should adjust planting to avoid flowering and grain filling coinciding with the historically coldest months.

Producers who work with two or three annual crops can also use staggered planting. Instead of concentrating the entire area on a single date, planting is distributed over days or weeks within a window considered safe. This strategy helps to mitigate climate risk and reduces the concentration of labor demand during harvest. It also allows for the correction of any errors in decision-making regarding the planting time. Staggered planting can also facilitate taking advantage of market conditions, since different harvest times allow for seeking periods of more favorable prices.

The bean planting window plan should be updated annually. Changes in weather patterns can modify the risk associated with specific dates.

Delays in the start of the rainy season, prolonged dry spells, rising temperatures, and more frequent frosts are examples of situations that can alter the conditions observed in the historical average. Therefore, the windows should serve as a reference, not as rigid dates. The producer and the technical manager can advance or postpone sowing within the recommended limits, considering the actual field conditions and the most recent technical guidelines.

The exact planting dates depend on factors such as soil type, altitude, climate history, and production system, whether irrigated or rainfed. The recommendation is to consult the official agricultural zoning for bean cultivation in the municipality and seek guidance from an agricultural engineer to adjust the planting window to the specific conditions of the property.
