The Goiás Agricultural Defense Agency (Agrodefesa) reports that it is investigating two more suspected cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) in Goiás. The notifications were registered on June 9, after the death of subsistence birds on properties located in the municipalities of Santo Antônio da Barra, in the Southwest region, and Montes Claros de Goiás, in the Center-West region of the state.
State agricultural inspectors from Agrodefesa attended the locations within 12 hours of notification and collected samples, which were sent to the Federal Laboratory of Agricultural Defense (LFDA) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), in Campinas (SP), for analysis. The estimated time for completion of the reports is 10 business days, from the delivery of the material to the laboratory and also depending on the demand from the LFDA.
With these new records, the state now has three suspected cases under investigation. The first occurred last Sunday (06/08), with the death of a black swan at the Goiânia Zoo, which remains closed as a precautionary measure until the tests are completed.
In the second case, in Montes Claros de Goiás, the deaths of 35 chickens and seven turkeys were recorded. The animals' signs included drooping wings, difficulty breathing, nasal discharge, apathy, diarrhea, etc. In Santo Antônio da Barra, the deaths of approximately 100 chickens were recorded. The clinical signs included apathy, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, facial edema, among others.
The properties were closed as a precautionary measure and containment measures were immediately adopted, in accordance with the protocols of the National Poultry Health Program (PNSA), including prohibiting the movement of animals, restricting access by people and adopting biosafety measures.
The notifications were duly entered into the Brazilian Veterinary Surveillance and Emergency System (Sisbravet) and are being investigated in accordance with national animal health surveillance protocols. To date, there has been no confirmation of the presence of the virus in any of the occurrences.
Agrodefesa emphasizes that, to date, there are no suspected cases on commercial farms in the state of Goiás, which remain free of IAAP. The Agency reinforces that all actions are being carried out in a preventive manner, with the aim of mitigating health risks and preserving the health status of the State.
Agrodefesa acts as the official body responsible for animal health in Goiás and will continue to conduct investigations with total technical rigor, in alignment with Mapa, monitoring the situation continuously and providing updates as the investigations progress.
The collaboration of the population is essential at this time. Any occurrence of mortality or clinical signs in birds must be immediately reported to Agrodefesa, by telephone/WhatsApp (62) 98164-1128.
Finally, it is necessary to ensure that the consumption of poultry meat and eggs remains safe for the population.
