Other patterns of interaction between the oceans and the atmosphere also contribute to climate variability and can help explain observed differences between one event and another.

According to agricultural engineer Gilberto Cunha, in addition to El Niño – The Southern Oscillation, known by the acronym ENSO, is one of the many large-scale phenomena capable of influencing weather conditions in different regions of the planet.

Among them are the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), also called the Antarctic Oscillation (AAO), the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO).

Although they operate on different spatial and temporal scales, these mechanisms may be interconnected and cause impacts far from their regions of origin.

These influences between different regions are called atmospheric teleconnections. They can interfere with temperature and precipitation patterns, as well as the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.

Gilberto Cunha explains that these teleconnections are associated with so-called Rossby waves, triggered by anomalies in ocean surface temperature and by heat flows transferred through convective processes.

The behavior of these waves can vary according to the characteristics of each interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere. Therefore, even when regional impacts show some similarities, no single episode of El Niño It's exactly the same as the other one.

The Indian Ocean also interferes with the climate system.

One of the examples cited by Cunha is the Indian Ocean Dipole. The IOD measures the difference in sea surface temperature between the western and eastern parts of the Indian Ocean. When the IOD is in its positive phase at the same time as a... El NiñoThis can lead to the formation of an atmospheric circulation pattern associated with what is known as Super El Niño.

In this case, according to the analysis, the occurrence of one is not enough. El Niño of very strong intensity. The Indian and Pacific Oceans need to be aligned in their positive phases for this configuration to occur.

Southern Annular Mode may influence rainfall in the South.

Another phenomenon highlighted by Gilberto Cunha is the Southern Annular Mode, also called the Antarctic Oscillation. The SAM represents differences in atmospheric pressure between the Antarctic region and the mid-latitudes. In its positive phase, low pressure predominates over Antarctica and high pressure in the mid-latitudes. In the negative phase, this configuration is reversed.

This mechanism can influence the climate of southern Brazil, especially the rainfall regime during spring. According to Cunha, the phenomenon also helps to explain some of the precipitation anomalies that are not directly related to the phases of ENSO.

Global warming may alter known patterns.

The interaction between these phenomena becomes even more important in the face of global warming. According to Gilberto Cunha, there are signs that atmospheric teleconnections considered classic may be undergoing changes, both in the intensity of their impacts and in the extent and location of the affected regions.

There is still no complete clarity on how global warming might modify these relationships. The increased concentration of greenhouse gases alters atmospheric conditions and may make the behavior of known weather patterns less predictable.

In this scenario, understanding not only El Niño, but also the combined action of different oceans and atmospheric mechanisms, becomes important for interpreting anomalies in rainfall, temperature, and extreme events.

THE MM Cereais works with the best grains on the market and also keeps you up to date with the latest news and analyses on agribusiness.
Don't forget to follow our social networks.

Access News Source

O El Niño é um dos fenômenos mais conhecidos por sua influência sobre chuvas, temperaturas…

[258
244,248,255,249,254,250,246,247,256,245,253,252,251
post-27923","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-safra","tag-agrolink","tag-agrotoxicos","tag-artigos-tecnicos","tag-classificados","tag-colunistas","tag-compra","tag-cotacoes","tag-defensivos","tag-eventos","tag-noticias","tag-precos-agricolas","tag-previsao-do-tempo","tag-venda
["GET
