The use of castor oil in crop rotation systems has been demonstrated in the Cerrado, mainly in Bahia and Mato Grosso, and has shown positive results in soil regeneration, with benefits in terms of reduced compaction and increased water retention.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Igor Borges, head of sustainability at OR\u00cdGEO, a joint venture between Bunge and UPL focused on sustainable agriculture in MATOPIBAPA, Mato Grosso, and Rond\u00f4nia, explains that castor bean has a developed root system, which helps loosen soil compaction and naturally control nematodes. "It fits well into regenerative programs, also aiding in the recovery of degraded pastures."<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Data from the National Supply Company (CONAB) show that castor bean cultivation in Brazil reached 64,200 hectares in the 2024\/25 harvest, an increase of 9.4% compared to the previous cycle. Average productivity also increased, from 1,484 kg\/ha to 1,693 kg\/ha. Bahia stands out with a harvest of 36,300 tons, followed by Mato Grosso, with 1,814 tons. The market also drives the crop's growth. In January, the price per bag of castor bean rose from R$ 199.70 to R$ 272.50, a rise of 36%.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n "Castor beans require less water to complete their cycle compared to other crops grown in the Cerrado and also contribute to more efficient soil structuring and greater water retention, especially in areas of low fertility," explains OR\u00cdGEO's head of sustainability.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n OR\u00cdGEO has been promoting the use of this oilseed as part of its regenerative agriculture programs, focusing on the off-season and providing technical guidance to producers in the states of MATOPIBAPA, Mato Grosso, and Rond\u00f4nia.
