Millet

Millet and its multifunctionalities

Millet: High production potential and nutritional value

Millet is a highly nutritious and resistant cereal, ideal for feeding laying hens.

In general, millet plays an extremely important role in national agribusiness due to its versatility, that is, it is used for several purposes, such as grain production, cover crop for direct planting, forage plant, in addition to allowing the production of flour for human consumption and, more recently, as a plant for biomass production aiming at the generation of biofuel through enzymatic reactions.

MM Cereais is a pioneer in the commercialization of this product, meeting the demands of farms throughout the country.

Millet Cultivation and Harvest in Brazil

Benefits of Millet for Animals and Industry

The sixth most important cereal in the world, millet comes after wheat, rice, corn, barley and sorghum, and is used in animal and human food. In addition to these two uses, it also serves as a cover crop for no-till systems, helping to increase crop productivity.

In Brazil, most of the millet production — around 80% — is used to make feed for laying hens. The remaining 20% is used in feed for fish, cattle, and other animals.

An important step towards expanding the use of this cereal was taken in 2021, when ANVISA (National Health Surveillance Agency) approved the use of millet in human food.

In African and Asian countries, millet is already widely consumed, forming part of the traditional diet of these regions.

  • Harvest period: Harvesting takes place between 75 and 120 days after planting, depending on the variety.
  • Region that produces the most: Bahia and Goiás are the largest producers, with estimates of 200 thousand tons in the 2022/2023 harvest.
