Cultivation and Harvest of Green Mung Beans in Brazil
In Brazil, the production of green mung bean is incipient, but the trend is growing due to the increased demand for bean sprouts. The plant is an annual, erect or semi-erect, with stem, branches and leaves covered in hairs, and with a height that varies from 0.3 to 1.5 m.
The Brazilian states that produce green mung are: Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Tocantins, Bahia and Piauí.
Mato Grosso has seen a large increase in production areas.
About 95% of the production goes to the foreign market.
Cultivation and Harvest
- Planting period: In the Central West, most of the planting is of the second crop and is implemented after the soybean harvest. In the Southeast, planting is done between October and December.
- Harvest period: The harvest takes place between July and September in the Central West and between February and April in the Southeast.
- Region that produces the most: Bahia and Minas Gerais are the largest producers.
