US tariff threatens to halt Brazilian beef tallow exports

Brazilian beef tallow exports are among the most vulnerable to the new tariff package announced by the United States. According to an analysis by Consultoria Agro Itaú BBA, approximately 98% of all tallow exported by Brazil is destined for the American market, making the sector highly dependent on this export channel. If the surcharge is implemented, the impact will be direct: a significant drop in exports would occur, with the potential for a near-total halt in shipments.

Although Brazil is the main supplier of beef tallow to the US, accounting for 35% of the American import agenda, the country competes with other exporters, such as Australia and its South American neighbors, which also supply the product and can fill part of the gap left by the Brazilian retraction.

In Itaú BBA's assessment, export restrictions would leave more tallow available to the domestic industry, which could have secondary effects on sectors such as biodiesel and oleochemicals in Brazil. Even so, dependence on the American market and the concentration of sales make the segment extremely sensitive to tariff changes, amid an already unstable trade environment subject to rapid reconfigurations.

The US signal, therefore, calls into question a highly concentrated trade flow, which until now had been growing at a rapid and steady pace. The sector is awaiting the outcome of negotiations between the governments to understand whether there will be room for exceptions or adjustments before the new rates come into effect.
