MT government withdraws expropriation proposal after request from Famato and agricultural entities

The Agriculture and Livestock Federation of the State of Mato Grosso (Famato) received with respect and recognition the statement filed by the Government of Mato Grosso with the Federal Supreme Court (STF), in which it withdraws the previous request for application of art. 243 of the Federal Constitution, which provides for the expropriation of rural properties with illegal deforestation.

The decision was taken after a meeting with Famato and other entities representing the productive sector in Mato Grosso, when a joint document was delivered warning of the risks of legal uncertainty arising from the measure, as well as discovering more effective and fair alternative ways to tackle illegal deforestation.

Famato reiterates its commitment to combating illegal deforestation and environmental preservation, as long as constitutional principles, the rights of rural producers and the instruments provided for in the legal framework are respected. To this end, it advocates the use of control mechanisms, inspection, land regularization and incentives for sustainable production as the most effective and rigorous forms of environmental protection.

Finally, Famato confirmed the sensitivity and institutional stance of Governor Mauro Mendes in reassessing the previously filed initiative, promoting democratic dialogue and listening to the state's productive sectors. This attitude reaffirms the Government's commitment to legality, legal certainty and the construction of balanced solutions between production and preservation.
