Goiás strengthens cotton production and increases competitiveness in the international market

Present in the daily lives of millions of people around the world, cotton is one of the most versatile and essential natural fibers for several industries. In Brazil, cotton farming remains strong among farmers in Goiás, which could place the state in seventh place in the national production ranking in the 2024/25 harvest, with the harvest expected to reach 138.2 thousand tons.

Goiás production is strengthened by good agricultural practices and efficient management, ensuring fiber quality and competitiveness in the international market. Registration with the State Agricultural Defense System (Sidago), mandatory within 30 days after sowing, ensures the phytosanitary conditions of crops and contributes to pest control, such as the boll weevil.

Furthermore, the sector also stands out for its commitment to sustainability. The Responsible Brazilian Cotton Program (ABR) certifies national production, ensuring that crops meet strict governance, environmental management and working conditions criteria. This certification, internationally recognized by the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), allows access to demanding markets, especially in Asia, where the demand for high-quality fibers continues to grow.

“Quality is the result of the commitment of our producers, who invest in technology, sustainability and efficient management. In addition, mandatory registration with Sidago strengthens the commitment to phytosanitary conditions and increases the competitiveness of the sector”, highlights the head of the State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Seapa), Pedro Leonardo Rezende.

The secretary also emphasizes the importance of the new edition of Agro em Dados, which provides a detailed analysis of agricultural production in Goiás. “In this March edition, we present an updated overview of our agricultural production, with strategic information on harvests, the performance of cotton, livestock and the state’s exports. Goiás continues to advance and consolidate its position on the national and international scene,” he concludes.
