Following a request from the Anti-Illegal Deforestation Coalition, comprised of the following entities from the productive sector: the Mato Grosso Soybean and Corn Producers Association (Aprosoja MT), Famato, Fiemt, Cipem, OCB-MT, Acrimat, Acrismat and Aprosmat, Governor Mauro Mendes (União) pledged this Thursday (03.04) to send a petition to the Supreme Federal Court (STF) in the coming days to disregard his initial request for authorization to expropriate properties with illegal deforestation. The speech was made during the participation of the chief executive in a meeting with members of the entity.
“I think we need to control this game, we will find an alternative and I have made arrangements with the entities. I received the documents that the productive sector sent, I have already made arrangements with the State Attorney General's Office, and we are forwarding the document to the Supreme Court asking them to withdraw our proposal. There is no problem, but with the commitment of the entities, we will discuss together measures to really penalize these 1%, 2 % there. And I always told him a lot, we have to separate what is legal from what is illegal, what is irregular”, said the governor. “And also, I think we need, when creating this alternative, to work on this better”, he added.
The president of Aprosoja Mato Grosso, Lucas Costa Beber, spoke about the action.
“We had a controversy in the ADPF case at the STF regarding the possible confiscation of land due to illegal deforestation, which would generate legal uncertainty even for producers who are legal, and the government proposed as an alternative the creation of a working group to discuss measures to combat those who are in fact illegal so as not to harm those who are legal, mainly aiming to improve the image of our State in international trade, especially of grains such as soybeans and corn,” said the president.
Aprosoja Mato Grosso will now continue working with the Anti-Illegal Deforestation Coalition of the productive sector to create measures to combat illegal deforestation.
In addition to the presence of the state governor, the vice-governor, Otaviano Pivetta, and the chief secretary of the Civil House, Fábio Garcia, the second day of meetings was attended by producers from all regions of the state to discuss the Sustainability Commission's agenda. The highlights were COP 30, the Water Guardian Program, the Legal Soy Program and actions to combat fires.
Producer Bruna Soares Alves dos Santos, a member of the Sorriso branch who participated in the meetings for the first time, highlighted the importance of the event for producers to understand the work developed by the organization. “I think it is very important for Aprosoja MT to offer all the knowledge about its work, because until now I did not know how big this work is and in how many areas it operates. We can see what is really being done, that we have projects that are being executed, monitored, the agencies that are being inspected, and this makes us more aware of what is happening in our lives, both on the property and in everything that involves agriculture,” said Bruna.
Wagner Martins, an associate producer at the Tangará da Serra hub, emphasized the importance of the meetings. “It is certainly great to be here, because on our own we have little access to certain information, so we can present our demands and Aprosoja MT, through the access it has, ends up building this bridge, and taking our complaints as well. So we bring it to Aprosoja MT and they take it forward.
The producer also highlighted the benefits of the partnership with the fire department. “Everything that was discussed today is very important to us. I am a newcomer to Mato Grosso, only four years ago. And we had a fire on our property in 2024, which was terrible and we were very afraid of how to act at that moment, and now that we started attending Aprosoja MT, we know some things that can be used”, he said.
With the end of the meetings, Aprosoja MT ends this week's debates within the technical committees and will hold, on Friday (04.04), the first General Assembly of 2025.
